Professor in the Division of International Health and holder of the Premier's Fellowship at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia, from May 2004. Previously Professor of Microbiology and Adjunct Professor of Tropical Infectious Diseases in the University of Queensland, 1995-2004, and a senior academic staff

member in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Western Australia (1973-1994). Elected honours include Secretary-General of the International Union of Microbiological Societies, Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, Past President of the Australian Society for Microbiology and of the Asian-Pacific Society for Medical Virology, and Fellow of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine.

John MackenzieDr. Mackenzie was a Co-Recipient of The Medical Journal of Australia/Wyeth Research Award for the best original research paper published in The Medical Journal of Australia during 1996, a co-recipient of the James H Nakano Citation of the National Center for Infectious Diseases of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for an outstanding scientific paper published in 1999, awarded the Excellence in Virology Award by the Asian-Pacific Society for Medical Virology (2000), and awarded Officer in the Order of Australia (2002) for services to public health research and to education . A member of various international committees including the Scientific Advisory Committee for Global Health Security and the Steering Committee for the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network of the World Health Organization, Member, Advisory Board, Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases, Chinese University of Hong Kong, . Professor Mackenzie was recently seconded to the World Health Organization in Geneva to work on SARS programs.
