Dr. Alonso Aguirre is Director for Conservation Medicine at Wildlife Trust, based in Palisades, New York. He also serves as Clinical Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine lecturing in the courses Conservation Medicine and Comparative Medicine and is Adjunct Professor at Columbia University where he teaches at the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology the graduate course Disease Ecology and Conservation . In addition, he teaches at CERC Conservation Biology Certificate Program on a regular basis.

 

Alonso AguirreAfter obtaining his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine he received a M.S. in wildlife biology and epidemiology and a Ph.D. in wildlife biology and protected areas management from Colorado State University (CSU). Following a two-year faculty appointment at Oregon State University working with wildlife-domestic animal disease interactions in national parks, he returned to CSU as assistant professor. There, he developed research on sea turtle biology, management and conservation with National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and taught a senior course Diseases of Wildlife . Also, led training and research efforts on ecosystem health and biological diversity with Smithsonian Institution, and wildlife field anesthesia trials with Wildlife Laboratories, Inc.During 1995-98, he acted as the veterinary medical officer/epidemiologist for NMFS Protected Species Investigation Honolulu Laboratory extensively working on health assessment and disease monitoring of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal and continued his long-term research with marine turtles.

Dr. Aguirre has extensive international experience and continuously conducts wildlife management and conservation courses in Latin America, Europe and the United States . He funded and chaired the Wildlife Disease Association Latin American Section, and was President Elect of the American Association of Wildlife Veterinarians. He has published over 145 professional papers and monographs including the books Conservation Medicine: Ecological Health in Practice and Helminths of Wildlife: A Global Perspective. Dr. Aguirre has briefed the US Congress, Administration, and federal agency leaders. In 1998, he received the Harry Jalanka Memorial Medal from Finland, the most prestigious award in zoological medicine, for his contributions to the field.
